Don't Overeat in the Holidays, eat Naturally!

As we come into the festive and holiday season I am so grateful that I learnt how to eat naturally and can teach others such a positive and empowering process. Often in the holiday’s we prepare ourselves to overeat promising to get back on track in the New Year which usually means feeling uncomfortable most of the time and then feeling guilty afterwards. It can often over shadow the joy of the holidays.

The most wonderful thing about “Natural Eating” is its simplicity. You don’t have to buy special ingredients, watch what you eat, deprive yourself or anything else which is out of your own control. By listening to yourself you simply eat what you want when your body tells you it’s hungry, and then stop when it tells you to stop. It sounds simple and it is, the difficult part is trusting yourself and believing that you can do it. Initially you need to be very mindful when you eat to break the old habits, but once you “get it”, it is the most natural thing in the world.

This is because our bodies were designed to eat in this way. It is not natural to limit our intake of food or not eat a particular food group in an effort to lose weight. All that “diet” type behaviour does is make you feel deprived, so eventually you overeat on the food you were depriving yourself of anyway.

There is normally a lot of stress and pressure put on us over the holidays and often food can play a big part in that. However as a natural eater I no longer have the additional worry around food during the holidays. When I’m hungry I eat, when I’m not I don’t. I can eat whatever I want when I want. I don’t need to wait for the holidays to treat myself as I enjoy my favourite food all year round. Because of that I rarely overeat, I know when I am satisfied and stop at that point.

Natural Eating is a common sense approach that is sustainable because you get satisfaction from food. You enjoy what you eat but don’t overindulge because instead of eating out of habit you now listen when your body tells you it has had enough. You know you can eat when you are hungry again so you don’t have to have it all now.

So I encourage you to enjoy your holiday, focus on the joy of giving and spending time with family and friends, travelling or relaxing. Don’t let food ruin it for you or even eat out of obligation. Listen to your body and eat what you want when you are actually hungry. You will feel so much better if you stop when you are satisfied rather than being over full. Now that’s natural.
